The new Munich trade fair centre was built between 1994 and 1998 on the site of the former Munich-Riem airport. With its highly modern exhibition halls, the spacious outdoor area and the Messesee (trade fair lake) at the main entrance, the new Munich trade fair centre occupies the northern part of the airport grounds. The southern part is built with the residential buildings of the Messestadt Riem and the Riem Arcades. For extra-large events the Hall C1 of the new Munich trade fair centre can be connected to the ICM Congress Centre.
A highlight of the Munich trade fair centre is especially the construction machine trade fair Bauma which takes place every three years. On the roofs of the exhibition halls is one of the world’s largest solar panels, which generate electricity of about 1 GWh per year. The entire system of the Munich trade fair is heated solely with renewable energy from a geothermal power plant. There is a shuttle bus service between the exhibition grounds and the airport.
